You have one product. You have one slide deck. You have one marketing-approved tagline.

And you're using them to talk to a dozen different job titles with a dozen different problems.

You pitch your new analytics platform to the Head of Sales, talking about pipeline visibility and forecast accuracy. They nod along. Then you get a meeting with the CFO, and you use the exact same pitch. They stare at you blankly and say, "Interesting. Let me get back to you." They never do.

The problem isn't your product. The problem is your pitch. You think you're selling one thing, but you're not. To your buyers, your single product is a multitude of different solutions. You're selling a Swiss Army knife, but you keep trying to open a wine bottle with the screwdriver.

Your job is to figure out if they need the corkscrew, the blade, or the tiny scissors. Selling the wrong tool for their specific problem makes you look incompetent.

The CFO's Product vs. The Engineer's Product

Let's make this real. Imagine you sell a platform that automates cloud infrastructure management. It has tons of features: auto-scaling, cost optimization reports, security compliance checks.

You get a meeting with a VP of Engineering. You position the product like this:

"We help engineering teams like yours automate deployments and reduce manual configuration errors. Our customers ship code 40% faster and spend less time on tedious infrastructure tasks, which means your best engineers can focus on building new features instead of firefighting."

The VP of Engineering gets it. You're speaking their language: speed, efficiency, developer happiness. You're selling The Velocity Product.

The next week, their CFO joins the call. If you give the same pitch, you will lose. The CFO doesn't care about "shipping code faster." That sounds like an expense.

For the CFO, you must reposition the exact same platform:

"We help finance leaders de-risk their cloud spend. Our platform gives you predictable monthly costs and automatically cuts waste, saving our customers an average of 22% on their AWS bill. This turns your unpredictable cloud budget into a fixed, manageable operational expense and improves your gross margins."

See the difference? You didn't mention a single new feature. You just changed the frame. You're no longer selling The Velocity Product. You're selling The Margin Product. It's the same software, but a completely different solution.

Most reps are too lazy to make this switch. They deliver a generic, feature-centric pitch that lands somewhere in the middle, exciting no one.

How to Discover Which "Product" They Need

You don't get to decide how to position your product. Your buyer does. Your job is to uncover their worldview through smart questions. This goes beyond basic discovery. As we've discussed before, Your Discovery Call Is an Interrogation, Not a Conversation if you're just running through a checklist.

Instead, ask questions that reveal their priorities and pain, in their own words.

Questions for a Technical Buyer (VP Engineering, Director of IT):

"Walk me through your current workflow for [the process we fix]. Where does it feel slow or brittle?"
"When your team talks about technical debt, what specific areas come up most often?"
"If you had a magic wand to eliminate one repetitive, low-value task for your team, what would it be?"

Listen for words like: bottleneck, manual, burnout, bugs, downtime, scalability.

Questions for an Economic Buyer (CFO, VP Finance, CEO):

"When you look at the budget for [department], which line items feel the most unpredictable or have the most variance?"
"How does the company measure the ROI on its technology investments today?"
"If this project is a home run, what metric on your executive dashboard will change six months from now?"

Listen for words like: risk, budget, margin, ROI, predictability, efficiency, headcount.

Their answers are your script. They are literally telling you which version of your product to sell them. All you have to do is listen and reframe what you say next.

Build Your Persona-Based Pitch Snippets

Don't do this on the fly. Do your homework. For the top 3-4 personas you sell to, create a dedicated pitch framework. It's not a script, but a collection of talking points.

For each persona, define:

1. Their Core Problem (in their language): What is the one thing that keeps them up at night related to what you solve?

2. Your Repositioned Solution: How does your product solve that specific problem? Connect your features to their world.

3. The Quantifiable Outcome (in their metric): What specific, believable number can you tie to the solution?

Let's go back to our cloud infrastructure example.

Persona: VP of Engineering

Problem: "My best engineers are quitting because they spend all their time on manual, boring DevOps tasks instead of building cool stuff."
Solution: "We take that manual configuration and deployment work off their plate, so they can get back to the engineering problems they were hired to solve."
Outcome: "Teams like yours are able to re-allocate two full-time engineers from infrastructure management to new product development within 90 days."

Persona: CFO

Problem: "Our cloud bill is a black box. It spikes unpredictably and I can't forecast it, which makes our financial planning a nightmare."
Solution: "We give you a single pane of glass into your cloud spend and automatically eliminate waste, turning that volatile cost center into a predictable monthly number."
Outcome: "We guarantee our customers see a 15-25% reduction in their cloud spend, directly improving your gross margin."

These aren't just taglines. They are mini-narratives. They show you understand the buyer's unique world. You're not just a vendor anymore. You're a specialist who understands their specific pain. This is the difference between being tolerated and being trusted.

Stop selling your product. Start selling your buyer's desired outcome, packaged in the language they understand. You'll find you suddenly have ten different products in your bag, and one of them is perfect for the person sitting across from you.

TL;DR

Stop the one-size-fits-all pitch. Your single product is seen as a different solution by every buyer persona. A VP of Sales and a CFO are not buying the same thing, even if it's the same software.
Use discovery to identify their "product". Ask questions that reveal the metrics and priorities specific to their role. Listen for their language (e.g., "risk" and "margin" for a CFO vs. "velocity" and "bugs" for an engineer).
Pre-build persona-specific value propositions. For each key buyer, map out their core pain, your repositioned solution, and the quantifiable outcome they care about. This turns a generic pitch into a targeted solution.
