Let's be honest. The space between an SDR booking a meeting and an AE taking it is a black hole. It's a void where context gets lost, enthusiasm dies, and commission checks go to disappear.

SDRs are comped on setting meetings. AEs are comped on closing deals. This fundamental misalignment creates the perfect storm for a broken GTM engine. The SDR, chasing a quota, pushes through a meeting that's 'technically' qualified. The AE, protective of their time, shows up to a call and realizes within minutes they've been set up to fail.

The result? Your AE's calendar becomes a graveyard for unqualified meetings. Trust erodes. SDRs think AEs are lazy. AEs think SDRs are incompetent. And your CRO wonders why conversion rates from 'Sales Qualified Lead' to 'Stage 1 Opportunity' are garbage.

This isn't a people problem. It's a process problem. You're operating without a contract. And it's costing you a fortune.

The Symptoms of a Broken Handoff

You know you have this problem if you hear these phrases echoing in your sales pit:

From the AEs: "This lead is terrible." "They have no budget." "The SDR just wanted to hit their number." "I'm talking to an intern."
From the SDRs: "The AE never even followed up." "They disqualified it without giving a reason." "I tee up perfect meetings and they let them die."
From the data: High no-show rates for initial discovery calls. A huge drop-off between meetings 'held' and opportunities 'created'. SDRs smashing their meeting quota while AEs miss their revenue targets.

The blame game is the most expensive game you can play in sales. Every minute an AE and SDR spend arguing is a minute they're not talking to prospects. Every poorly qualified meeting that slips through burns your most valuable resource: the AE's time and focus.

The Fix: A Ruthlessly Clear Service Level Agreement (SLA)

The solution is an internal contract between the SDR and AE teams. A Service Level Agreement. This isn't a 20-page legal document. It's a simple, one-page charter that defines the rules of engagement with zero ambiguity.

If you don't have one, stop what you're doing and build one today. If you have one, it's probably too vague and collecting dust. Time to tear it down and rebuild it.

A real, working SLA has three parts: The Definition, The Packet, and The Promise.

Part 1: The Definition of a "Qualified Handoff"

Get your best SDRs and your top AEs in a room. Lock the door. Don't let them out until you have a definition of a qualified meeting that everyone agrees on. This needs to be brutally specific. "BANT" is not a definition. It's a lazy acronym.

Your definition should be a checklist. No exceptions.

Example for a B2B FinTech company:

A meeting is only 'qualified' for handoff if ALL of the following are true:

Company: Over 250 employees and headquartered in North America.
Contact: Director-level or above in Finance or Operations. We must have their title and LinkedIn profile.
Pain: Prospect has explicitly admitted to struggling with either a) manual invoice processing or b) international payment reconciliation. We need a direct quote in the notes.
Context: Prospect has confirmed they are actively evaluating solutions in the next 6 months.
Authority: Prospect has confirmed they are part of the evaluation committee or the ultimate decision maker.

If a booked meeting doesn't tick every single box, it does not get passed to an AE. It goes into a nurture sequence. Period. This isn't about punishing SDRs. It's about protecting the AEs' time and focusing the entire team on revenue, not vanity metrics.

Part 2: The Handoff Packet

Once a meeting is qualified, the SDR must deliver a standardized 'packet' of information to the AE. This isn't a stream-of-consciousness brain dump in a Slack message. It's a template inside your CRM that must be filled out for the handoff to be official.

The Handoff Packet Template:

CRM Record: Link to the fully updated contact and account record.
Key Discovery Notes: What was the trigger event that made them look for a solution now? (This is how you move from cold calling to what the article "Stop Cold Calling. Start Trigger Selling." talks about).
Direct Pain Quote: The exact words the prospect used to describe their problem. "We're spending 40 hours a week just matching POs to invoices."
The Goal: What does the prospect hope to achieve by taking this meeting with the AE? "They want to see how the dashboard can give them real-time visibility into departmental spend."
Key Players: Who else is involved? Who holds the budget? Who will be the end user?
Logistics: Confirmed date and time, calendar invite sent and accepted.

This takes the SDR an extra five minutes. It saves the AE 30 minutes of clumsy rediscovery and prevents them from walking into a call blind.

Part 3: The AE's Promise

The SLA is a two-way street. Once the SDR has delivered a qualified meeting with a complete packet, the AE has obligations.

The 4-Hour Rule: The AE must review and formally 'accept' or 'reject' the opportunity in the CRM within 4 business hours. Silence is not an option.
Rejection with Reason: If rejected, the AE must select a specific reason from a dropdown menu that maps directly back to the qualification criteria. Examples: "Contact not Director+", "Pain not confirmed", "Company size out of ICP". They must also add a one-sentence explanation.
The Feedback Loop: This rejection data isn't for punishment. It's the single best coaching tool your SDR manager has. If one SDR constantly gets meetings rejected for "Pain not confirmed," that's a skill gap you can fix.
AE Accountability: Accepted meetings must be followed up on within the same 4-hour window. The AE is now the owner and is responsible for the outcome.

When you implement this system, the finger-pointing stops. It becomes a clean, data-driven process. The SDR's job isn't just to book a meeting. It's to deliver a qualified meeting that the AE accepts. The AE's job isn't to complain about leads. It's to accept or reject them based on the agreed-upon contract and then work the accepted ones to closure.

The handoff stops being a black hole and starts being a well-oiled part of your revenue machine. You'll set fewer meetings. And you'll close a hell of a lot more deals.

TL;DR

Build a non-negotiable SLA. Get SDRs and AEs to agree on a brutally specific, checklist-style definition of a 'Sales Qualified Lead'. Vague definitions kill pipelines.
Standardize the info exchange. Create a mandatory 'Handoff Packet' template in your CRM. The SDR must complete it for the handoff to count. No packet, no handoff.
Enforce a two-way commitment. AEs must accept or reject leads within a set time (e.g., 4 hours), providing a specific reason for rejection based on the SLA. This turns blame into actionable coaching data.
