It's the first full week of the quarter. Your quota is reset, your pipeline is empty, and your manager just dropped a spreadsheet with hundreds of accounts into your lap. Your territory.

What do most reps do?

They sort by name, or maybe by employee count, and start at the top. They treat their territory like a to-do list to be checked off. A phone book to be dialed. This is why most reps are on a pipeline rollercoaster. They spend a month frantically prospecting, a month in demos, and a month desperately trying to close, only to start the next quarter with nothing.

Stop it.

Your territory isn't a list. It's a chessboard. And you need to start thinking three moves ahead. The work you do this week and next will determine if you're celebrating in September or explaining your forecast miss. As we've said before, Your Q3 Is Won or Lost by July 21st. Your territory plan is how you win.

Stop "Working" Your Territory. Start Conquering It.

There's a massive difference between being busy and being productive. The rep who "works" their territory makes 50 dials a day to random accounts. They send out a generic cadence and hope for the best. They measure activity.

The rep who "conquers" their territory knows that not all accounts are created equal. They spend a full day planning their attack before making a single call. They allocate their most valuable resource, their time, with brutal intentionality. They measure results.

Your ideal customer profile is a starting point, but it's often a lie, as we explored in Your ICP Is a Lie. Here's How to Find the Truth. A 10,000-employee company in your ICP that just had layoffs is a worse target than a 500-employee company that just hired a new CMO from a company that used your competitor.

Conquering your territory means layering buying signals on top of firmographics. It means treating your account list not as a flat file, but as a three-dimensional map with peaks and valleys of opportunity.

The Tiering System That Actually Works

Forget sorting by revenue. Forget sorting by employee count. Those are lazy, lagging indicators. You need a dynamic tiering system based on the probability of a sale in the next 90 days.

Here's a simple framework. Let's call it the 10-30-60 Rule.

Tier 1: The Crown Jewels (Top 10% of Accounts)

These are your absolute best-fit accounts. They get 50% of your prospecting time and your full, undivided attention. You should know these companies better than their own employees.

ICP Fit: Perfect match on firmographics (industry, size, geo).
Strong Signals: They are showing multiple, recent signs of intent or need. This is where you apply the lessons from Stop Cold Calling. Start Trigger Selling. Examples include:
Hiring for key roles related to your solution (e.g., "Director of Data Analytics").
Recently received a new round of funding.
A key executive just started who you've sold to before or who came from a customer.
Mentioning a key strategic initiative in their earnings call that you solve for.
Deal Size: High potential for a large, strategic deal.

Your approach here is bespoke. You're not using a cadence. You're running a multi-threaded, highly personalized account-based play. You're mapping the organization, identifying the entire buying committee, and crafting messaging that speaks directly to their announced company goals.

Tier 2: The High-Potential Knights (Next 30% of Accounts)

These accounts look good, but maybe a key piece is missing. They get 30% of your time.

ICP Fit: Strong fit.
Signals: They might have one or two signals, but they aren't as strong or as recent as Tier 1.
Deal Size: Medium to high potential.

Your approach here is semi-personalized. You can use a structured cadence, but every single first touch must be customized. Reference a specific podcast their CEO was on, a recent company announcement, or a connection you have in common. Your goal is to use personalization to uncover the stronger signals that will either promote them to Tier 1 or disqualify them.

Tier 3: The Pawns (The Remaining 60% of Accounts)

These accounts fit your basic ICP criteria but show zero buying signals. They are, for now, just names on a list. They get the remaining 20% of your time.

ICP Fit: Basic fit.
Signals: None that you can find.
Deal Size: Variable, but likely smaller.

Your approach here is efficiency. This is where a well-structured, automated, but still thoughtful cadence does the heavy lifting. The goal is not to spend hours researching each one. The goal is to cast a wide, intelligent net to see who raises their hand. A good response from a Tier 3 account can instantly promote them to Tier 2 for further investigation.

From Tiers to Action: Your First 3 Weeks of Q3

Knowing your tiers is useless without a game plan. Here's how to activate this strategy starting today.

Week 1 (This Week): Analysis & Planning

Do not make a single cold call. Your job this week is to be a strategist.

Block a full day in your calendar for "Q3 Territory Planning".
Go through your entire account list and assign every single one to Tier 1, 2, or 3. Use your CRM, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, and other intel tools. Be ruthless.
For every Tier 1 account, build a mini-plan. Who are the 3-5 key players? What is your hypothesis for the business pain? What is your specific point of view for the first touch?
Set up alerts (e.g., Google Alerts, LinkedIn notifications) for every single Tier 1 and Tier 2 company.

Week 2: The Tier 1 Offensive

This week is about depth, not breadth.

Dedicate Monday and Tuesday exclusively to executing your Tier 1 plans.
This is multi-channel, hyper-personalized outreach. A call to the VP, a personalized email to the Director referencing a specific point from their latest whitepaper, and a thoughtful LinkedIn connection request to a Manager.
Your goal is not to book meetings. Your goal is to start meaningful conversations. Aim to connect with at least one key player in 50% of your Tier 1 accounts by Friday.

Week 3: Broaden the Attack

With your Tier 1 offensive underway, you now expand your efforts.

Continue nurturing your Tier 1 conversations.
Launch your semi-personalized cadences for your Tier 2 accounts.
Turn on your efficient, scaled cadences for your Tier 3 accounts.

By the end of Week 3, you've moved from a chaotic, reactive state to a proactive, strategic one. You'll know exactly which accounts hold the most promise, you'll have early conversations brewing in your top targets, and you'll have an automated system working to surface opportunities from the rest of your patch. You've stopped playing checkers and started playing chess.

TL;DR

Tier Your Accounts Now: Stop sorting by A-Z. Classify every account as Tier 1 (top 10%, perfect fit, strong signals), Tier 2 (next 30%, good fit, weak signals), or Tier 3 (rest, basic fit, no signals).
Allocate Your Time Ruthlessly: Spend 50% of your effort on Tier 1, 30% on Tier 2, and 20% on Tier 3. Your attention is your most valuable asset, invest it wisely.
Execute a Phased Attack: Use this week for planning only. Attack Tier 1 accounts with personalized outreach next week. Broaden to Tiers 2 and 3 the week after. Build your Q3 pipeline with intention, not brute force.

Your AI sidekick reads this and acts.
