Let's be honest. You love the feeling of a full pipeline. Opening your CRM and seeing a long list of deals is comforting. It tells your manager you're busy. It tells you that you have a shot.

It's also a lie.

A pipeline bloated with 'maybe' deals is more dangerous than an empty one. An empty pipeline screams for action. A 'maybe' pipeline whispers sweet lies, assuring you that everything is fine while it sucks away your most valuable resource: time. It destroys your forecast accuracy, ruins your credibility, and ensures you spend the last three weeks of the quarter in a blind panic.

A 'maybe' deal is a zombie. It looks alive. It shows signs of movement. You exchange pleasant emails. They say things like "this is really interesting" and "let me circle back with the team". But it has no soul. There is no real commitment, no compelling event, and no clear path to a signature. It's just... there. Clogging up your view and feeding you false hope.

Why We Cling to 'Maybe' Deals

Your attachment to these deals isn't a character flaw. It's a rational response to a broken system.

Fear of the Void: An empty pipeline is terrifying. It invites scrutiny. It makes you look like you're not working. So we fill it with anything that shows a pulse, even if it's faint. We confuse activity with progress.

Happy Ears Syndrome: We are wired to seek positive reinforcement. When a prospect says "Wow, great demo!", we hear "The PO is on its way!". We latch onto vague positive signals and ignore the giant red flags, like their refusal to introduce you to their boss or their inability to articulate a budget process.

The Sunk Cost Fallacy: You've done four demos. You've answered a dozen emails. You've spent hours on this deal. Walking away now feels like admitting defeat. It feels like you wasted all that effort. So you keep pushing, pouring good time after bad, hoping to justify the initial investment.

The Lottery Ticket: Every sales floor has a legend about that one deal that was completely dead and then magically resurrected in the final week to save someone's quarter. We cling to our 'maybe' deals hoping one of them is our winning ticket. Spoiler: it almost never is.

The Three Types of 'Maybe' Deals (And How to Kill Them)

You need to become a pipeline surgeon. Your job is to identify these zombie deals and remove them with precision. Here are the three most common variants.

1. The "Interested but Uncommitted"

This prospect loves your tech. They think it's cool. They agree it could probably help. But they have no compelling event, no defined timeline, and no authority to actually buy it. They are professional tire-kickers.

The Lie They Tell You: "We're definitely looking to do something in this area this year."
The Kill Shot Question: Stop accepting vague future timelines. Force clarity with this: "That's great to hear. Most of our customers are trying to solve a specific problem by a specific date to achieve a specific metric. What is that for you? For example, are you trying to reduce support tickets by 15% before your Q4 peak season? If this isn't solved by then, what actually breaks?"

This line of questioning forces them to connect your solution to a real business problem. It helps you Find the Pain Behind the Pain in Discovery. If they can't answer, they aren't a buyer. They are a fan. Thank them for their time and move them out of your active pipeline.

2. The "Stuck in Committee"

You have a champion. They love you. They fight for you. But the deal is perpetually "under review" by a shadowy committee of legal, security, or "leadership". Your champion gives you weekly updates that amount to "still waiting".

The Lie They Tell You: "It's with the security team. Just waiting for their approval."
The Kill Shot Question: Take control of the process. "I completely understand those reviews are critical. To make sure we keep this on track, could we put 30 minutes on the calendar next week with you and the main contact from security? I can answer their questions directly and we can probably clear this up in one call. If we can't get that scheduled, it might be a signal that this isn't a top priority for them right now, which is okay to know."

This calls their bluff. If your champion can't or won't get the right people in a room, they aren't a champion. They're just a messenger. The deal is dead, and they just haven't told you yet.

3. The "Ghosting Prospect"

This one is the most frustrating. You had one or two great calls. There was clear momentum. You sent over a proposal or a follow-up email with pricing. And now... nothing. Complete radio silence. They don't say no. They just vanish.

The Lie They Tell You: (Silence)
The Kill Shot Tactic: The Breakup Email

Stop sending "just checking in" or "bumping this up" emails. They don't work. Be direct. Send this:

Subject: Closing the loop on [Your Company]

"Hi [Name],

Following up on our conversation about [the problem you solve].

I haven't heard back, so I'm assuming this is no longer a priority for you.

Based on that, I'm going to go ahead and close your file. If that's a mistake, please let me know.

Best,

[Your Name]"

This is powerful. It respects their time, creates urgency, and leverages loss aversion. You will be shocked at how many ghosts suddenly reappear with an apology and an update. And if they don't? You have your answer. The deal is dead. Close it and refocus your energy on deals that are actually alive.

Building a 'Maybe'-Free Pipeline

Killing 'maybe' deals is reactive. The real solution is to stop creating them in the first place.

Qualify Out, Not In: Your goal on a discovery call isn't to get to a second call. It's to find reasons why this prospect is a bad fit. Ask the hard questions about budget, timeline, and decision-making process upfront.

Define Exit Criteria: Know your non-negotiables. For example: If you can't get access to the economic buyer after the discovery call, you disengage. If they can't tie the project to a revenue or cost metric, you disengage. Write these down and stick to them.

Make Your CRM a Source of Truth, Not Hope: Your pipeline stages should reflect reality. Stop using "Proposal Sent" as a parking lot for deals with no confirmed next steps. Create a stage called "On Hold" or "Nurture" for anything that lacks a firm, calendar-booked next meeting. This prevents your CRM from becoming what we talked about in Your Sales Dashboard Is a Rearview Mirror: a useless look at past activities instead of a predictor of future revenue.

Your time is finite. Every minute you spend chasing a zombie deal is a minute you're not spending finding and closing a real one. Be a surgeon. Be ruthless. Cut the maybes and watch your forecast become reality.

TL;DR

Your pipeline's size is a vanity metric. Its quality is what gets you paid. Stop clinging to 'maybe' deals out of fear of an empty CRM.
Ask "kill shot" questions that force clarity on timeline, authority, and business pain. If a prospect gives vague answers, they aren't a real buyer.
Use a breakup email for prospects who go silent. It either resurrects the deal with urgency or confirms it's dead, allowing you to move on.
